Illegal settlements hurting rhino conservation

The Tribune, Guwahati, 7th March, 2013

The Kaziranga National Park, abode of one-rhino, in Assam has been facing a stiff challenge in keeping poachers at bay primarily because of growing number of settlements of suspected illegal migrants from Bangladesh around the park`s core area.

Poachers have been virtually on a rampage in the park since the beginning of this year, killing nine rhino so far.

Poachers continue to keep forest personnel on their toes despite deployment of additional forces.

These encroachers, suspected to be illegal Bangladesh nationals, have been accused of providing refuge to poachers and giving them information about rhinos straying out of the core area.
