World Water Day observed

Akash, a science and educational organisation of Biswanath Chariali, which has been working for creating scientific temperament and science education, observed the World Water Day recently on the premises of Akash. The United Nations has also declared 2013 as the International Water Cooperation Year.

In the day-long programme, a competition on quiz, essay writing and drawing on 'Water and Environment' was also held among the school students of Sonitpur on the eastern side of Jia Bharali river. The interactive and demonstrative quiz competition was conducted by Kshitish Saikia, associate professor, Biswanath College along with Kshiradhar Baruah, a prominent science writer and Ripunjay Bordoloi, a science teacher and secretary of Akash.

In the prize distribution ceremony and open meeting presided over by Kshiradhar Baruah, president of Akash, Dr Ratna Kingkar Goswami, senior lecturer, Biswanath Agriculture College, addressed the gathering as the chief guest while Rana Hazarika, retired lecturer, chemistry, Biswanath College, also addressed the students. In the quiz competition, the first, second and third prizes were won by St Xaviers' School Biswanath Chariali, Bhaskarjyoti Adarsha Vidyapith, Chatiya, and Naduar Jatiya Vidyalaya, Jamugurihat respectively.

It may be noted here that Akash, the brainchild of noted science writer, Kshiradhar Baruah, retired professor, Chemistry, Biswanath College has been offering yeoman's service by organising awareness campaigns, competitions, demonstrations, experiments and training to young students since its inception.
