3 held with tiger skin worth Rs 6L

The Karveer police on Saturday arrested three persons and seized tiger skin worth Rs. Six lakh from their possession. The arrested accuseds have been identified as Sairaj Satpute (21), Amit Nale (23) and Amit Suryavanshi (21). The police have registered a case against them under section 9 (prohibition of hunting), 39, 40 and 51 of wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

Acting on a tip off, the police formed two teams on Saturday morning and a laid a trap near Sangrul Phata. When the accused were moving from Sangrul Phata to Kuditre village, they stopped near a bank. The police swung into action and arrested them.

According to the police, the trio was hid the tiger`s skin in a bag. The police have also seized the motorcycle in which they were travelling.

The police said the tiger skin is 4 -feet long from mouth to tall and one foot broad. They have also confirmed the originaity of the skin from the forest department.

Vaishali Jadhav, deputy superintendent of police, said, "The skin musthave was twenty years old. We are investigating from where the trio got the skin and to whom they were selling or they were just acting as middleman.

We will interrogate them further and find out if there is any network of selling animal skins."

Vijay Shelke, deputy forest officer, said. "We have given orders to range officers to look into the matter. The size of skin signifies that it was a cub.
