Sterlite gets SC relief, but asked to pay 100 cr for polluting

In a relief to Sterlite Indsutries, the Supreme Court on Tuesday overruled a Madras High Court order on Shutdown of the country's largest copper smelting plant in Tuticorin, Tamilnadu.

However, a fine of Rs.100 crore was imposed  on the Anil Agarwal-promoted Vedanta Group company for causing  ecological damage to the area surrounding the unit. The apex court had in October 2010 granted the company a stay on the Madras HC order.
