Mother poached; 15-day-old rhino calf rescued

Rhino relocation has got a boost in Manas National Park following a rescue operation of a 15-day old rhino calf of the mother poached on April 2, it was rescued successfully involving thirty frontline and senior staff of Assam Forest Department, veterinarians, twenty local villages and three elephant borne teams - the calf was administered oral rehydration and is currently under observation of the veterinarians.

"It was a  challenge  getting hold of the calf as it was very scared but thankfully it is fine and doing well now", said a member of the rescue team.

Work will start shortly to construct a boma, a special fenced enclosure to which the calf will be transferred with in a week.

The rhino will be raised with the help of a rescue and rehabilitation experts from WTI. It has been translocated under the Indian Rhino Vision 2020).  Out of the 18 rhinos translocated to Manas National park 14 survive today.
