Tusker with head chopped off found in Jalpaiguri (March)

Hindu, Delhi, Monday 24th March 2014

A full-grown tusker was shot dead and its head was chopped off  in Buxa Tiger Reserve (BTR) in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district, a forest official said here on Sunday.

“The carcass of a tusker was located in western part of reserve during the day. It seems the animal was shot at least 4-5 days back,” Principal Chief Conservator of Forests N.C. Bahuguna told The Hindu .

Forest officials suspected involvement of poachers in the incident.

“Usually in such cases, the animal is shot and then the poachers track the animal for several kilometres before it dies,” Mr. Bahuguna said.

The police and forest officials have launched a manhunt for the poachers, he added.
