6 arrested with elephant tusk worth 33 lakh

The Times of India, Pune, 5th August, 2014 The Pune rural police arrested a six member gang for allegedly possessing elephant tusk worth Rs. 33.3 lakh at Somatane phata toll naka in Talegaon Dabhade on Sunday around 9:30 pm. The arrested accused have been identified as Sameer Shaikh (36) and Akash More (19), both from Khandala, Dhairyasheel Salunkhe (23), Mohit Deshmukh (20), Satyam More (20) and Deepak Salunkhe (60), all residents of Akluj, Bharshi and Malsiras in Solapur district. A magisterial court in Vadgaon Maval on Monday sent the suspects to police custody till August 4. "We had received reliable information that the suspects travelling in a car (MH12-ET 4119) from Pune to Mumbai will be transport cloth bag from its dickey. He said the suspects were taken into custody after they failed to offer an explanation on how they came to possess the tusk. The action against the suspects was taken in consultation with the forest department. "As of now, the suspects have not divulged any information to the police. We will interrogate them to find out whether they have killed an elephant, obtained the tusk from someone else or who are their prospective customers among other possible reasons," Patil added. The suspects were arrested under relevant sections the Wildlife Protection Act.
