Rethink decision to scrap Gadgil report: KSSP

The Hindu, Kalpetta, 2nd September, 2014

The Kerala Sasthra Sahitya Parishad (KSSP) district committee has urged the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) to reconsider its decision to scrap the Madhav Gadgil Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel (WGEEP) report.

Recently, the MoEF informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that it had not processed the report for any action. All future activity would be based on the report of the high-level working group (HLWG) headed by K. Kasturirangan, the then Member of the Planning Commission.

The KSSP said in a statement here on Monday that such a decision would adversely affect posterity. The WGEEP report was a comprehensive record on the conservation of the Ghats region. By rejecting the report the door for survival of the future generations had been closed, it said.

‘Authentic’ document

The government should consider the report an authentic document and take steps to implement the recommendations after discussing the content at the village level.

The capitulation of the government and the MoEF before vested-interest groups was quite unfortunate, the statement said.

The KSSP would launch a campaign named ‘Conserve the Western Ghats’ in the first week of September. KSSP would also organise a State-level seminar on September 21 at the Municipal Town Hall here, the statement added.
