Katraj Zoo acquires white tiger, tigress

Pune: The citizens will able to see a new pair of white tiger and tigress in the Rajiv Gandhi Zoo from May this year.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), which manages the Katraj Zoo, has brought them from Aurangabad recently and will keep them in an enclosure at the zoo.

Rajiv Gandhi Zoo Director Rajkumar Jadhav confirmed the news to Sakal Times and said, “The zoo had brought two tigers from Aurangabad and they will be put in an enclosure after three weeks when they will become familiar with the zoo environment.” The strength of the tigers at the zoo has now gone up to seven.

Jadhav said that as the existing white tiger has become old, there was a need of a young big cat in the zoo. Now, as a young white tiger has been brought from Aurangabad, there are two white tigers and a tigress.

Earlier, there were two yellow and black striped tiger and a tigress. As the sex ratio was disproportionate, the zoo had decided to bring one more tigress from Aurangabad zoo. Now, there are two tigers and two tigress.

The zoo management is also planning to concentrate on breeding and increasing the number of tigers in the zoo. Now, the zoo will concentrate on reproduction of the tigers as the proportion had been maintained.

The newly brought tiger and tigress had been kept at a rehabilitation centre and in the month of May, they will be transferred to the Rajiv Gandhi Zoo where the citizens will be able to see them.,%20tigress
