Times Now, 19th June, 2021

Guwahati: An adult tiger died after being allegedly hit by a bullet fired by a forest guard who was trying to prevent it from entering a village near the Kaziranga National Park’s Kohora range in Golaghat district of Assam.

DFO (Eastern Assam Wildlife Division) Ramesh Gogoi said that around 7 am on Friday, a tiger’s carcass was found in Karuabari area. Subsequent inquiries revealed that the big cat had died of a gunshot injury.

On Thursday, the big cat had killed an animal in the area, following which the villagers called in the forest guards to push it back into the forest. The forest guards fired in the air, in order to scare the tiger away. It is suspected that a stray bullet might have hit the tiger, killing it, The Indian Express reported.

The carcass was buried near the Maloni anti-poaching camp in the presence of a representative of the National Tiger Conservation Authority. A probe into the incident has been ordered, and a one-member committee has been constituted to conduct inquiries, according to a report by The Times of India.

In another incident, a tiger died after being hit by a vehicle while crossing a national highway in Umaria forest division’s Gunghutti range in Madhya Pradesh in the wee hours of Friday, according to reports.

A forest official it seems some light vehicle hit the tiger on NH-43 around 3 am on Friday, adding that the big cat’s body parts were intact.

“I have talked to our forest department officials about putting up signboards to sensitise drivers on the highway about maintaining caution while driving in the area to avoid the recurrence of such accidents,” Umaria DFO Mohit Sood said.
