Extreme rainfall in south Tamil Nadu during the Northeast monsoon is much more common than in the Southwest monsoon season, according to studies

 

Raghu Murtugudde, professor at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay and emeritus professor at University of Maryland, described the reason for the heavy rain in south Tamil Nadu to be a 'wind tunnel' effect caused in the Palk Bay and Gulf of Mannar regions between Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.
